Jones Landing — Family Heritage & Legacy
where connection, service & leadership began
Jones Landing Consulting is named in honor of my second great-grandfather, William T. Jones (1818-1880) — a pioneering entrepreneur and leader who shaped the maritime and hospitality life on Peaks Island, Maine.
William established the first ferry service from Portland, Maine to Peaks Island — welcoming passengers arriving by steamboat at what became known as Jones Landing pier — a vital gateway for travel, commerce and lasting community.
The landing that bears his name stands as a symbol of connection and lasting community service impact.
In 1855, William converted his cooper shop into one of the island’s earliest hospitality establishments, and in 1860, he built and operated the Union House Hotel at 6 Welch Street. As Peaks Island emerged as a summer destination, the Union House became a central gathering place for travelers, island residents, and visitors.
In 1871, William helped form the Peaks Island Steamboat Company, establishing the first regular ferry service from Portland, Maine to Peaks Island.
The west-side landing area became known as Jones Landing.
